Practical Course on Physical Anthropology in Buitrago
This is not just another "pay to excavate" proposal. It is a practical and theoretical course, directed by a university professor, aimed at those who want to gain practical experience in the excavation of a necropolis and the analysis of human skeletal remains.
OBJECTIVES
- To know the different contexts in which human bones can be found and excavated.
- To know the current legal framework for the treatment of human bones.
- To understand the role of the archaeologist and physical anthropologist from field excavation to laboratory study.
- To know the main parameters for a correct anthropological and palaeopathological report of a burial.
- Understand the use of tools applicable to anthropological study, both in the field and in the laboratory.
- To understand the different processes of natural mummification in different archaeological contexts.

- To know the strategy, procedures and means of archaeological excavation of burials, inhumations, cremations and other types of finds of human remains.

The VII Practical Course on Physical Anthropology, organised by OSTEO Research, Renoarchaeology and the Town Council of Butrago del Lozoya (Madrid), will be held from 1 to 29 August 2021. The excavation will take place in the old cemetery of the charity hospital (hospital of the poor) from the 15th to the 19th century. The course has an eminently practical character, designed to carry out all the activities related to physical anthropology at an archaeological site, complemented with laboratory practice and theoretical teaching.

Price
One week course: course, full board and insurance - 300 €.
Two-week course: course, full board and insurance - 500 €.

The costs of education, maintenance, accommodation, insurance are included in the price and will be borne by the Organisation.
The cost of transport to Buitrago del Lozoya at the beginning and end of the course is NOT included in the price.
Teaching:
- Mornings: practical work at the archaeological site from 8 am to 2 pm.
- Afternoons: practical and theoretical classes will take place in the laboratory.
- Working days: Monday to Saturday. Excursions every Sunday.
- On the last day, each student will show a report of the excavation and present their findings to other students.
