This is not just another "pay to excavate" proposal. It is a Summer Course of the University of Alcalá, practical and theoretical, directed by university professors, with specific themes in each of the four weeks, aimed at those who want to deepen in a practical way in the excavation of a necropolis and in the analysis of human skeletal remains. And with the recognition of 2 ECT credits for each week of the course.

Students can register for one, two, three or four weeks, to choose between the 4 weeks of the excavation, depending on their interest in the topics covered in each of the weekly sections.
The excavation will take place in the Cemetery of the Hospital de San Salvador (15th-19th century), located next to the wall, and 200m from the students' place of residence, where the theoretical classes and laboratory practicals will also take place.

IMPORTANTStudents can enjoy free board and lodging during the weekends, even if there are no classes, if they choose the two, three or four week course.
Class schedule:
Mornings: practical work at the archaeological site from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., under the supervision of the teachers.
Afternoons: The practical classes of osteological study of the exhumed remains during the mornings and the theoretical complementary classes, with specific topics, will take place in the laboratory, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
Teaching hours: 40 hours per week (8 per day): 33 hours of practical classes in excavation and study of remains and 7 hours of theory.
Credits: 2 ECTS Credits PER COURSE WEEK.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
First Week. July 31-August 4, 2023. COURSE 43-01.
The theoretical classes will be focused on the knowledge of Physical and Field Anthropology, with special attention to Funerary Archaeology and everything necessary to carry out a good excavation of human skeletal remains.

Second Week. August 7-11, 2023. COURSE 44-01.
The second and third weeks will focus on Palaeopathology, with theoretical classes in the afternoons, but with an eminent practical load in the form of cases studied by the course lecturers. There will also be classes related to Forensic Anthropology and Criminalistics, taught by university professors who are part of our teaching staff.

Fourth Week. August 21-25, 2023. COURSE 46-01.
In the fourth week, classes will be devoted to the study of the processes of Egyptian Mummification and the Palaeopathology of Mummies, with the knowledge gathered by the course lecturers during their 20 years of experience in international projects in Egypt.

TEACHERS
The professors of the UAH Summer Course are professionals in university teaching, with proven experience in the field of Physical Anthropology, Archaeology and Palaeopathology.
The IX Practical Course on Physical Anthropology, organized by the University of Alcalá, OsteoResearch, Renoarchaeology and the City Council of Buitrago del Lozoya (Madrid), will be held from 1 to 26 August 2022. The excavation will take place in the old cemetery of the Hospital San Salvador (Hospital de pobres), with a chronology from the 15th to the 19th century. The course has an eminently practical character, designed to carry out all the activities related to Physical Anthropology in an archaeological site, complemented with laboratory practices and theoretical teaching.

REGISTRATION and RESERVATION
The maximum number of students will be 14 for each week of the course. Admission will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

TEACHING

The costs of education, maintenance, accommodation and medical insurance are included in the price and will be borne by the Organisation.
The cost of transport to Buitrago del Lozoya at the beginning and end of the course is NOT included in the price.
