Course in Spanish and English. January 9-13, 2023
17:00-19:00 h
Organized by: OsteoResearch.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Course designed for members of the State Security Forces and Corps, university students of Criminalistics, Dentistry, Law, Criminology, Biology, History, Egyptology, Archaeology, Chemistry, Pharmacy, Medicine, Paleopathology, Computer Science, Nursing, Electronics and other professionals related to forensic sciences.
The course is aimed at Bachelor's and Master's degree students in the branches of science related to Physical Anthropology who wish to consolidate and broaden the knowledge acquired in the official teaching. It is also for archaeologists interested in the study of the skeletal remains that appear in the excavations of necropolis and that often remain without due attention in the archaeological reports, and for those interested, of any profile, in this science, which is essential to reconstruct the way of life of the society we are investigating.
Special emphasis will be placed on the determination of sex and age of skeletal remains, explaining the different methods that have been shown to be most reliable and that are used to estimate these essential parameters for determining the profile of an individual. Sex estimation in non-adults will have a special chapter, with numerous photographs and radiographs compiled by the professors during their extensive experience in studies of this type.
The biological profile of the individuals will be completed with the calculation of Height, Robustness and Lateral Asymmetry, as well as the estimation of the Ancestral Origin of the Individual.
Finally, special attention will be paid to Dental Anthropology and the preparation of Odontograms and dental charts, both analogue and digital. Dental pathology will also have a specific focus in this course.
Course objectives:
- To understand the importance of the study of human skeletal and mummified remains within an archaeological or forensic context.
- To know the main methods of sex estimation.
- To know the main methods of age estimation.
- To know the main methods of ancestral origin estimation.
- To know the main methods for estimating the main bioanthropological characteristics of an individual: robustness, stature, laterality.
- Learn how to use radiological and CT images in archaeological and forensic remains for a correct estimation of the age of the individual.
- To learn how to make a basic anthropological report from the skeletal remains of a problem individual.
